Course Description: In this course, participants learn first hand how to apply acupuncture during an IVF cycle. This course includes an overview of reproductive endocrinology, how it works and where acupuncture can be used to benefit reproductive outcomes. There are also discussions of legal and ethical issues and how to interface with physicians and staff in a professional manner. Finally, before completing the requirements of this course, participants must sit in on two embryo transfers performed by one of the instructors and they must be able to perform a third transfer under observation of one of the instructors to ensure that embryo transfer protocols are being applied properly.

Course Description: Bob will explain the etiological and pathological role of damp-heat, blood stasis, and qì stagnation and the roles of each viscera and bowel (zang4-fu3) in the development of men’s reproductive, urological, and sexual diseases. He will emphasize the importance of developing a sound approach to diagnosis and of understanding the various possible patterns that can contribute to men’s diseases in unique and challenging ways. Throughout the discussion and through case study examples, the instructor will explore how disease causes and pathomechanisms affect diagnosis and treatment strategies for male infertility, male sexual dysfunction, prostatitis, and prostatic hyperplasia. This workshop will emphasize the importance of: 1) expanding our understanding of men’s physiology in Chinese medicine; 2) realizing that various disease causes and pathomechanisms— including repletions and vacuities—often contribute to men's diseases and; 3) developing sound approaches to diagnosis and treatment of men which reflect the recent contributions of modern Chinese specialists in men’s disease. We explore the roles of damp-heat, blood stasis, and qì stagnation, and the roles of each viscera and bowel (zang4-fu3) in the development of men's reproductive, urological, and sexual diseases. Through case studies and discussion, participants will gain a working knowledge of Chinese medical approaches to the sexual and reproductive diseases of men, including male infertility, male sexual dysfunction, acute and chronic prostatitis, and prostatic hyperplasia.

Course Name: Chinese Medicine: The Fertile Soul Understanding of Infertility

Course Description: This course will provide a deep understanding of infertility according to Chinese medicine. We will deeply examine the zangfu patterns of imbalance presenting as infertility, and the associated Western medicine correlates. We will investigate the theory, the mechanisms of disease, and treatment according to both Chinese medicine and Western medicine in a case-based format when possible, paying special attention to herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage, TCM nutrition, and breathing techniques. We will also engage in a detailed explanation of the specifics of Western reproductive procedural medicine, including labs, protocols, glossary, and integrative treatment strategies. Haung-Lao classic teachings as well as other great classical works inform much of the foundation of this workshop. Topics to be covered include: foundations of gynecology and reproductive medicine including anatomy, physiology, and pathology, and issues such as premature ovarian failure, PCOS, reproductive immunology, endometriosis, and implantation issues. The Infertility Cure, first published in 2005, has helped tens of thousands of women and couples become pregnant by offering a straightforward mind-body approach that empowers the patient to take charge of their reproductive life, develop the healer within, and chart their own course on this most challenging fertility journey. For example, endometriosis is an inflammatory disease according to Western medicine (TH1 predominant state)and, from the TCM perspective, endometriosis is a pattern of disharmony which includes 'heat-toxin' trapped in the interior. Asherman's syndrome presents as a result of scarring which disallows uterine functionality. From a TCM perspective, Asherman's syndrome can be seen as damage to qi, blood and vessels and collaterals due to stagnation and stasis.
