In Memorium
Alex Berks, L.Ac., FABORM, CEFP.
August 14, 1964- January 1, 2012

Alex Berks, An ABORM Fellow, passed away from sarcoma on January 1.  We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and our Fellow, Denise Weisner, and their children, Noah, 15, and Ethan, 9.

Alex’s passion for healing and his focus on the field of oncology began long before his sarcoma diagnosis in 2010. He studied the treatment of acupuncture for cancer patients at Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center, where he also lectured to oncologists. He co-founded the Association of Integrative Oncology and Chinese Medicine and authored a blog, Healthwithcancer.blogspot.com, where he shared freely of his research and knowledge.

An elder of the CEFP community, he infused his practice with Taoist principles.  In his work with his fertility patients, he was, in Denise’s words, “a gentle giant with a heart of gold”.  A devoted yogi, he would meditate for his patients during IVF transfers; integrating models of ancient medicine.

A proud father, he delighted in his boys’ interest in robotics, computers, sports and other school activities. A loving husband, Alex adored and respected Denise.  Their partnership extended into their business, Natural Healing and Acupuncture in Los Angeles.

Many tributes to Alex begin with “I only met you a few times, but felt a connection….” That is because Alex had no pretense, and his humble self-confidence encouraged authentic relationships at first meeting. Equally at ease conversing with his professional medical community or with a clerk at the checkout counter, Alex was an inquisitive, compassionate man who valued every life. Our world is missing one beautiful soul, our loss is, like Alex was, quietly profound.
